One of the main points about altcoins is their purpose. If an altcoin is associated with a serious project that will have some use in the future, then it is a relatively reliable investment option (relative - because the team may split up, the goals may not be achieved or unreasonably overstated). If investing in memcoin, it is a "caliph for an hour", totally dependent on influencers.
Yes but it is important that the proejct really delivers something that Bitcoin can't deliver and often times they don't add any value to the blockchain space. Man application can be done on the existing blockchains already and it doesn't need another alt coin and yet the keep popping up.
